We were supposed to get a Kory in costume during season one before the episode where it was featured was scrapped, but this one is really cool and highlights that our girl is a damn alien queen! I’m glad they decided to finally just let her hair be Black. The actress has consistently been one of the best parts of this entire series, and I am so happy that they have finally delivered on styling her in a way that best complements her. I have many complaints about HBO Max’s Titans (r.i.p., DC Universe), but Starfire, as played by Diop, is not one of them.

The comic world contains a lot of different, diverse superheroes but when it comes to making movies and television shows, most of the mainstream superheroes are white and males. The transition might be rough, but it is even more important to have start having black women like Dion be casted as superheros. Colorism has taken away many opportunities from women who look like Dion in the entertainment industry and it is sad how people are still not used to seeing dark skinned women portraying fictional superhero characters.Įven though Dion playing Starfire received many negative comments, the fact that Dion did in fact get the part shows how easy it is to fight against the issue of colorism.

There has always been an issue of constantly portraying black women with lighter skin and other white features in the media.įor decades, the media has consistently favored black women with lighter complexions and this has lead to the development of colorism. For the simple fact that Starfire’s character is indeed a black women that presented in the comics, it is evident to see how colorism is a prevalent issue in the media today. Sadly, some people did not agree with the fact that Dion was black woman raved over her skin being too dark for the character. Since Anna Diop was playing the new Starfire, she and the production team of the show received major, racist backlash due to her physical appearance.

Starfire is a fierce, black alien princes who has this unique physical appearance of golden, orange skin and massive curly hair.įor years, the Titans have only been portrayed through animation. Together, they all put their powers together to fight against their villains and local criminals. For further context, Starfire, along with other many other young superheros, is apart of this group called the Titans. Teen Titans has been around for years, along with the fictional superhero, Starfire. If thought being an ordinary black woman was a struggle in America, imagine trying to be in the shoes of Anna Diop, the new actress who is playing Starfire in the new Titans series on the DC Universe streaming service.
